Korean actress Lee Sang-ok passed away at the age of 46 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Lee Sang-ok, known for her roles in popular movies like Train to Busan and The Mimic, passed away in a hospital following a fight against pancreatic cancer. She was 46 years old.

According to media reports, the actress was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer last year and had paused her acting career to focus on treatment. However, her health did not improve and worsened earlier this year.

Pancreatic Cancer — "The King of Cancers"

Pancreatic cancer is considered one of the most dangerous forms of cancer, often dubbed the "king of cancers" due to its difficulty in detection and rapid metastasis. By the time it's diagnosed, it is typically already in stages three or four, limiting treatment options.

Dr. Chen Yue-bai from the Oncology Department at National Taiwan University Hospital highlighted that pancreatic cancer usually shows symptoms only when the tumor has reached a significant size. Early signs are often vague, making early detection challenging.

Common symptoms include:

  • Jaundice: When the tumor presses on the bile duct, preventing bile from flowing to the small intestine, leading to yellowing of the skin, dark urine, pale or oily stools, and itching.

  • Abdominal and back pain: The cancer can compress nearby organs and spread to nerves.

  • Weight loss and loss of appetite: Due to poor nutrient absorption.

  • Nausea and vomiting: Caused by the tumor pressing against the stomach, resulting in partial obstruction.

  • Enlarged gallbladder or liver: Fluid accumulation due to bile duct compression.

  • Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis causing pain, swelling, redness, and warmth.

  • Diabetes: Cancer damages pancreatic cells, leading to diabetes complications.

Pancreatic cancer is highly lethal, with a five-year survival rate of less than 5%. Doctors advise regular health check-ups for early detection and timely treatment.

Preventive Measures Against Pancreatic Cancer

  1. Control Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders:
Type 2 diabetes and metabolic issues are linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. It's crucial to control blood sugar levels through exercise, a balanced diet, and adherence to medical advice.

  2. Change Dietary Habits:
Limit consumption of saturated fats, sugars, fast food, sweets, red meat, and processed meat.
Increase fiber intake, green vegetables, and fruits. Studies show that a high-fiber diet can improve digestion and lower the risk of pancreatic cancer.

  3. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Obesity is a major risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is essential to reduce the risk.
